THE MOTSEPE FOUNDATION AND SANLAM CHAMPION YOUTH EMPOWERMENT WITH EXCITING SCHOOLS’ SPORTS AND CULTURE COMPETITIONS

The Kay Motsepe Schools Championship and ABC Motsepe SA Schools Choral Eisteddfod have geared up for an exciting and impactful return, bringing together thousands of young talents from across South Africa in a celebration of sportsmanship, leadership, and community spirit.

The competition is the biggest of its kind in South Africa with over 10 000 schools participating annually and prize money totalling R11 750 000.

The media engagement event held on Monday, 29th July 2024, at Sanlam’s office in Sandton, set the stage for what promises to be outstanding schools’ football, netball, and musical events.

Sanlam’s involvement in the Kay Motsepe Schools Championship and the Eisteddfod schools choral clash underscores the company’s commitment to youth empowerment and holistic long-term development. This event aims to highlight the synergy between sports and achieving financial confidence. Sport and finance may seem like different worlds, but Sanlam believes they share powerful parallels. Just as athletes set a goal, have a plan, and train relentlessly to achieve peak performance on the field, every day South Africans, including the youth, work diligently to build financial confidence and resilience.

The media engagement featured prominent figures including Founder of the Motsepe Foundation Dr. Patrice Motsepe, co-founder and CEO  Dr. Precious Moloi-Motsepe and Bongani Madikiza, CEO of Sanlam Retail Mass, They shared insights on the property’s goals, objectives, and the profound impact of sports, arts, and culture on young people’s lives.

“The campaign represents far more than just a sporting tournament and a musical competition,” said Dr. Patrice Motsepe. “It is a beacon of hope and opportunity for our nation’s youth. We are thrilled to be involved in such a spectacle which offers a platform for students to not only showcase their athletic prowess and talent, but also to cultivate essential life skills such as teamwork, discipline, and resilience.”

Sanlam’s Bongani Madikiza shared this sentiment: “At Sanlam, our purpose is to empower communities to be financially confident, secure and prosperous. Furthermore, we believe in the transformative power of sport. Our partnership with the Motsepe Foundation on these initiatives,  is testament to our commitment to making a positive impact by helping the youth to develop the necessary skills to set them up for success once they leave the sports field for good. Sports, arts, and cultural activities are profound socio-economic catalysts that bring people together and inspire our young people to dream and imagine a bigger life for themselves.”

The event also saw contributions from sports personalities like Television Presenter Andile Ncube, Former Mamelodi Sundowns Captain Hlompho Kekana, and Former SPAR Proteas player Tshina Mdau, who shared their experiences and highlighted the importance of sports in personal and community development.

“We are immensely grateful for the unwavering support of our partners and stakeholders who share our vision of empowering the youth and transforming lives through these initiatives ,” added Dr. Patrice Motsepe. “Together, we are not only shaping the athletes and musicians of tomorrow but also cultivating leaders who will drive positive change in their communities.”

The campaign launches shortly before the Eisteddfod National Choir Clash, which will take place from 7- 10 August in Gauteng, the Netball National Finals from 15 – 17 August in North West, and the Football National Finals in October. The Championship  & Eisteddfod seeks to support the best talents that will surface from these various tournaments, offering young talents the chance to shine on a grand stage.
