BRADBURG CROWNED JOBURG OPEN CHAMPION AS MAYOR HAILS HIM AS CITY OF JOHANNESBURG AMBASSADOR

England’s Dan Bradbury produced a moment of brilliance under pressure to capture his second Joburg Open title in dramatic fashion at the iconic Houghton Golf Club on Sunday, sealing victory with a spectacular closing performance that kept the eyes of the global golfing fraternity firmly fixed on Johannesburg.

Bradbury finished on 17-under-par after a superb final round 65, highlighted by a crucial birdie on the 17th hole and a sublime chip on the 18th that saved par and secured the title.

The victory was anything but straightforward. With the lead changing hands multiple times over the closing stretch, South Africa’s Casey Jarvis came agonisingly close to forcing a playoff but missed a six-foot putt on the final hole, finishing on 16-under-par alongside Brandon Robinson Thompson.

The win marks Bradbury’s second Joburg Open title, adding to his 2022 triumph and placing him among an elite group of multiple winners of the tournament, alongside South Africa’s Charl Schwartzel and Richard Sterne.

Bradbury credited a run of birdies on holes nine, ten and eleven as the turning point that reignited his challenge on the back nine.

“The three birdies in a row at holes nine, 10 and 11 was probably the turning point for me and it got me back in the tournament. Then at holes 12 and 13 I knew I was in this,” he said.

His composure was tested on the final hole when his aggressive second shot ran beyond the 18th green, leaving a delicate chip to save the par he needed for victory.

“That chip on 18 – I’m not known for my short game, so I was really pleased with that one. I was literally shaking over it and I’m really happy it came out like it did,” Bradbury said.

Executive Mayor of Johannesburg, Dada Morero, congratulated Bradbury on his triumph and praised the tournament for once again putting the city at the centre of the global golfing stage.

“Congratulations to Dan Bradbury on this incredible achievement. By winning the Joburg Open once again, he becomes an ambassador for the City of Johannesburg wherever he goes,” said Morero.

“For the past week the eyes of the golfing world have been firmly focused on Johannesburg, showcasing our city, our world-class facilities and our vibrant sporting culture to millions of viewers across the globe. We are proud that the Joburg Open continues to position our city as a leading destination for international sport.”

Bradbury’s victory also gives him a significant boost in his pursuit of one of the coveted PGA TOUR cards available through the season rankings.

“The goal was to get one of those 10 PGA TOUR cards, and this has made it that much more realistic,” he said.

As the curtain falls on another thrilling edition of the Joburg Open, Bradbury’s dramatic victory ensures that Johannesburg’s premier golf tournament once again delivered unforgettable moments on the world stage.
