BUSINESSWOMEN UNITE FOR GROWTH AND SUCCESS

Thembelihle Radebe

The Roodepoort City Hall was buzzing with energy as businesswomen from various sectors gathered for a workshop on Tuesday, 27 August 2024. Hosted by the Isiqalo Opportunity Centre under the City of Johannesburg’s Region C Economic Department, the event celebrated Women’s Month with a focus on learning, networking, and empowerment.

Lufuno Rasoesoe, the keynote speaker, captivated the audience with her inspiring story of transitioning from a stable corporate career to founding a detergent manufacturing company. Rasoesoe described her journey as “painful but rewarding”, highlighting the challenges and triumphs she faced in breaking into an industry dominated by multinational corporations. She encouraged attendees to take bold steps towards their dreams, advising them to start with what they have, embrace every experience, and never underestimate the value of kindness and humility.

“It was a huge leap of faith, leaving my comfortable corporate job to pursue my dream. But with every milestone and every win, I am reminded that I am exactly where I was meant to be. Remember every experience, good or bad, is necessary for your journey. Whatever your hands can do, give it your best shot. Start where you are, use what you have and do it best. Don’t miss your blessing by being arrogant. Your blessing is hidden in other people. You cannot help everyone but remember to be kind to everyone and always spread kindness,” said Rasoesoe.

The workshop provided a platform for women to share their experiences and the unique challenges they face in business. Many attendees expressed that societal expectations often pressure them to prove their worth simply because they are women. The session emphasized the importance of building strong support networks to maintain confidence and resilience during difficult times.

Tania Matidza urged women to prioritise self-care and maintain a positive mindset. She emphasized the importance of supporting each other and strengthening local economies, especially in township communities. “Our future is in our hands. Let us build each other and rebuild our own economy in the townships,” she said.

Keneilwe Motshoeneng encouraged the women to take advantage of hybrid classes offered by the University of Johannesburg. These courses provide not only business education but also mentorship opportunities and connections to various support systems, such as the Department of Labour.

Entrepreneur Nomsa Molefi shared her journey to success, expressing gratitude for the continuous support from the Isiqalo Opportunity Centre. She praised the centre for assisting entrepreneurs with funding applications and connecting them with government resources that facilitate business growth. “The Opportunity Centre is always welcoming to us as entrepreneurs. They do follow-up calls to support us when we have challenges.”

Simphiwe Malimela, the Deputy Director for Enterprise Development, concluded the event by honouring the efforts of women who have launched businesses through the Isiqalo Opportunity Centre. He reaffirmed the City of Johannesburg’s dedication to fostering an environment where women entrepreneurs can thrive and be recognised for their contributions.
