CITY CELEBRATES WOMEN AS THE HEARTBEATS OF JOHANNEBSURG

Women are the lifeblood of communities and the City of Johannesburg. This was the central theme of the annual Women’s Month celebration held on Friday, 23 August 2024, at the Brixton Multipurpose Centre.

Hosted by the Employment Equity and Transformation Sub-Directorate, in collaboration with Group Communication and Marketing, the event provided a platform for women employees to engage in discussions on diverse topics aligned with the national theme. It also served as a moment to reflect on the progress made in reshaping society and the workplace, particularly in advancing gender equality and promoting more balanced power dynamics between women and me

Over 500 women from the City’s workforce attended, dressed in their finest shades of pink, perfectly complementing the day’s decor. A series of speakers addressed topics ranging from women’s health and mental well-being to breaking the glass ceiling, achieving work-life balance, and overcoming barriers to entry.

The Member of the Mayoral Committee for Group Corporate and Shared Services in the City of Johannesburg, Cllr Loyiso Masuku, opened the event by acknowledging women as the heartbeats of the City. “You are more than just employees; you are innovators, leaders, and trailblazers. Your often unsung work forms the backbone of our City, from improving municipal services to fostering community development. You help us ensure that Joburg shines.”

Dr Nandi Dabula, Executive Manager: Productivity SA, addressed the “pull her down” syndrome that women often face. “We should be celebrating one another. We need to pull one another up,” Dabula said, noting that this syndrome can manifest in several ways, from gossiping to sabotaging others’ careers. “When we support one another, we can amplify our voices. Are you a saboteur or a builder? Do you create opportunities for other women? I challenge everyone today to start lifting other women up.”

Jenny Moodley, General Manager: Stakeholder and Public Relations at City Parks and Zoo, emphasized that women often work twice as hard to prove their worth and are underrepresented in boardrooms. “Let’s commit to encouraging and uplifting each other.”

Prizes were awarded, including best dressed and early bird. Entertainment featured performances by the Johannesburg Metropolitan Police Department choir as well as dances and poetry. The event left women feeling uplifted and inspired.
