In commemoration of Youth Month, the City of Johannesburg, led by Member of the Mayoral Committee [MMC] for Finance, Cllr. Margaret Arnolds, hosted a vital financial literacy programme at Bonwelong Primary School in Ivory Park, Region A.
This initiative, held on Tuesday, June 24, 2025, aimed to empower Grade 7 learners with essential knowledge and practical skills for informed financial decision-making.
The programme, a collaborative effort with Old Mutual and Junior Achievement, highlights the City’s commitment to youth empowerment, aligning with MMC Arnolds’ emphasis on education as a lever for long-term economic resilience.
“The youth are not a problem to be solved, they are a resource to be developed,” stated Cllr. Arnolds, affirming the City’s dedication to a financially resilient Johannesburg.
Learners actively engaged in interactive sessions, including a storytelling segment by Old Mutual and “Money Match” games from Junior Achievement, which imparted lessons on budgeting and saving. Outstanding participation was rewarded, with one learner receiving R500, inspiring peers to embrace financial literacy.
Erica Furumele, Principal of Bonwelong Primary, expressed deep gratitude, highlighting the programme’s value in equipping learners with “survival tools” beyond the classroom.
This initiative reflects the City’s pledge to nurture the next generation of leaders, aligning with the spirit of the 1976 youth, and ensuring young people are empowered for a brighter future.
