Recently, the Legislature Department in the Speaker’s Office – City of Joburg inaugurated the newly elected Joburg Junior Mayor, Councillor Kamogelo Malikane from St David’s Marist, Inanda and Junior Speaker, Councillor Mbalenhle Dlamini from Glenvista High School. The inauguration ceremony was held at Trinityhouse Glenvista High School.
The oath of office was taken by both junior councillors in the presence of a diverse audience, including teachers, parents, students, junior councillors, local councillors, city officials, and community members.
In his inaugural speech, Junior Mayor Kamogelo Malikane outlined his primary goals, emphasizing a campaign to promote entrepreneurship and sports among Johannesburg’s youth. “During my term, I plan to encourage and foster a culture of entrepreneurship among the youth. Understanding wealth is more than just knowing about money; it’s about networking and communication skills. It is also vital that sports resources and access are equitably shared, as sports have the power to unite us as South Africans,” Malikane stated.
Junior Speaker Mbalenhle Dlamini pledged her support for the junior mayor’s initiatives and detailed her own plans for her term. “I will work to make debate and public speaking more accessible through projects like ‘Asikhulume’ (Let’s Talk), bringing these opportunities to schools that currently lack them. Additionally, we aim to open ‘green doors’ for underprivileged communities by providing resources and assisting abused women and children wherever possible,” Dlamini said.
She encouraged the youth to recognize their power to influence and inspire change, concluding, “Together, let us ensure that the legacy we leave fills every young person in our City with hope and opportunities.”
Over their two-year term, the junior councillors will engage in various community projects and initiatives. The City’s Student Council, launched in 2007, aims to provide young people with leadership and civic engagement opportunities.
