Tinyiko Barbara Ngobeni

Various institutions and individuals from diverse backgrounds are expected to contribute their time and resources to charitable causes, uniting under the theme that honours Madiba’s legacy.

The City of Johannesburg is hosting a range of activities across its regions to celebrate International Mandela Day.

In Region A, library staff will cut down unwanted trees, perform repairs, and tidy up the surrounding area. Region B will see the Social Development Department host soup outreach at Westbury TDC, bringing warmth, care, and community spirit to residents and children.

In Region C, at Divine Grace Creche 1408 Agnes Street, Cosmo City, donations of tables, chairs, and mats will be made to support under-resourced crèches across Johannesburg.

Region D will feature a commemorative event at Thokoza Park, Rockville, hosted by Joburg City Parks and Zoo. This event will include wreath laying, ceremonial tree planting, and candle lighting to honour and reflect on the legacy of our national heroes.

In Region E, the Sandton Library at Mandela Square will provide soup to the homeless. In Region F, the Johannesburg SPCA at 5 Benray Road, Reuven, will be involved in various initiatives.

Finally, in Region G, activities in Ward 5 (Marikana) will include distributing winter necessities to identified indigent families, cleaning homes of vulnerable senior citizens, and conducting a winter safety door-to-door drive targeting the Marikana Informal Settlement.
