Johannesburg City Parks and Zoo, in collaboration with the Japan Institute, a global cultural initiative and sibling organisation of the Portland Japanese Garden, planted a sense of peace and harmony at grounds of the Johannesburg Botanical Gardens in Emmarentia on Tuesday, 05 December 2023. The tree-planting and plaque-unveiling ceremony, aimed at fostering the beginning of peace and dialogue between Johannesburg and Japan, was a resounding success, with representatives of Portland Japanese Garden, Joburg City Parks and Zoo (JCPZ) and guests gathered to witness this prestigious occasion.
Member of Mayoral Committee for Community Development Cllr Lubabalo Magwentshu expressed his gratitude to Japan Institute for nurturing the relationship with Joburg Botanical Garden.
He also acknowledged the institute’s trust in designating the garden to be the new home for Celtis Africana tree.
“As we gather for this significant occasion today, may this tree taking root in our African soil symbolise the enduring spirit of peace and cooperation between nations. May these joint ventures inspire creativity, build bridges, and leave an indelible mark on our shared journey toward a more peaceful and interconnected world,” said Cllr Magwentshu.
Local African dance crew Afro Beatz entertained the crowd, giving the event a real African vibe.
Drake Snodgrass, the President for Portland Japanese Garden Board of Trustees, said they were honoured to collaborate with City of Johannesburg.
“As we plant this Celtis Africana, I envision a future where it blossoms into a magnificent symbol of our fruitful partnership. In 20 years, may this tree stand tall, reflecting not only the growth of nature but also the enduring strength of the bond between our communities,” said Snodgrass.
Joburg City Parks and Zoo Managing Director Thanduxolo Mendrew said are thrilled to welcome the Celtis Africana to the Botanical Garden family.
He said this tree will not only add to the ambiance of the botanical garden but also provide shelter and space for reflection hope.
The celebration ended with the unveiling of a plaque marking the meaningful collaboration between the two cities.
