CITY’S EXECUTIVE MAYOR DADA MORERO, ELECTED PRESIDENT OF FMDV GLOBAL FUND FOR CITIES DEVELOPMENT

The City of Johannesburg is proud to announce that its Executive Mayor, Cllr Dada Morero, has been elected as the President of the Fonds Mondial Pour le Développement des Villes (FMDV) Global Fund for Cities Development) at the organisation’s Extraordinary General Assembly (EGM) and Board of Directors meeting held on October 5, 2024. 

This historic milestone is a testament to Mayor Morero’s tireless efforts in advocating for innovative financing solutions for urban development and local economies.

FMDV, a global alliance of local and regional governments, was established by UCLG and Metropolis to promote the debate around financing solutions for urban development and local economies. As a global alliance platform, FMDV brings together local and regional governments and their networks to share knowledge, expertise, and best practices in sustainable urban finance.

Under Mayor Morero’s guidance, the City has made significant strides in identifying innovative financial tools and mechanisms, including the development of Johannesburg’s green bond and pooled financing model. These pioneering financial instruments have become a benchmark for FMDV’s expertise in sustainable urban finance and have positioned the City as a leader in urban finance on the global stage.

The City’s active participation in multilateral institutions and global processes has also solidified its international reputation as a thought leader in urban development. Key engagements include:

·       Financing for Development: The City has been actively engaged in global discussions on financing for development, exploring innovative financing mechanisms to support sustainable urban development.

·       COP21: The City of Johannesburg has been a key player in global climate Change mitigation efforts, recognising the critical role of local governments in addressing climate change.

·       Habitat III: The City has contributed to the development of the New Urban Agenda, focusing on sustainable urban development and the implementation of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

·       Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs): The City of Johannesburg has mainstreamed the SDGs into its development planning, ensuring that its policies and programs align with the global development agenda.

Mayor Morero’s election as President of FMDV is a sign of confidence in his leadership and the City of Johannesburg’s commitment to sustainable urban development.

As President of FMDV, Mayor Morero will continue to champion the cause of sustainable urban finance, working closely with FMDV members and partners to promote innovative financing solutions for urban development and local economies.  He will continue to solidify the work that was done by his predecessors who were instrumental in placing the City of Johannesburg at the global stage.

The City of Johannesburg looks forward to the networks, collaboration and leadership, as it continues to play a critical role in shaping the global urban agenda.
