Johannesburg Metro Police Department’s (JMPD) Thabiso Makhetha has achieved an impressive 48th position in his racing category at the Virgin Active 947 Ride Joburg, held on Sunday, 17 November 2024.
Following his strong performance last year, Makhetha was seeded in the 5:40am start group, joining determined cyclists eager to conquer the 97km road race through the picturesque streets of the City of Johannesburg, adorned in their seasonal purple Jacaranda bloom.
He completed the race in an exceptional time of 2:38:55, narrowly missing his personal goal by just eight minutes.
“I set a target to beat my personal best, and although I don’t quite reach it, I’m proud of my achievement,” says Makhetha. “For context, seeding is based on your previous race time. Last year, I finished in 2:50:00, which placed me in my category for this year. That added pressure to meet my new target of 2:30:00. Starting at 5:40am, just after the elite riders, was a fantastic opportunity, and I’m thrilled to finish in 2:38:55, securing 48th in my category.”
Makhetha faced challenges during the race but pushed through with determination. “The Kyalami section is particularly tough. Ask any participant, and they’ll tell you the race is fast until Kyalami, where climbing and tactics come into play. Jan Smuts Avenue into Zoo Lake is the hardest part – a long, steep climb where many cyclists struggle. But it’s all worth it.”
There were also highlights. “I enjoy riding alongside one of the faster cyclists until halfway, where they outsprint me. It’s a great experience,” he says.
Makhetha expressed heartfelt gratitude to the City of Johannesburg for enabling his participation in such a prestigious event. “Cyclists from around the world come to Ride Joburg. Being part of one of the country’s top cycling events is truly incredible.”
Looking ahead, Makhetha hopes to see the City of Johannesburg’s cycling team join the elite category in the future. “That will be a dream come true,” he says.
After crossing the finish line, the first person he called was his mother, one of his biggest supporters. Makhetha also extended his thanks to the JMPD, the City of Johannesburg team, organisers, and everyone who supported him along the way. “Thank you deeply. Here’s to more achievements and even better results in the future,” he concludes.
