COMMUTERS URGED TO USE PUBLIC TRANSPORT TO REDUCE TRAFFIC CONGESTION

 Virgil James

Officials from the City of Johannesburg’s Transport Department interacted with motorists on the corner of Empire and Victoria roads in Parktown as part of October Transport Month on Friday, 25 October 2024.

The officials used the traffic congestion to promote the use of public transport as a better option over private vehicle use. Motorists were encouraged to use Rea Vaya and the Gautrain as the most efficient, cost effective, reliable, safe and greener modes of transport. “You could be well on your way to work had you taken a bus or a train but here you are stuck in traffic,” an official said loudly to motorists. Another said: “Choose public transport and directly contribute to reducing traffic congestion, carbon dioxide emissions and save on fuel costs.”

With the effects of climate change becoming severe, many cities are improving their public transport systems to cater for the needs of commuters and discourage reliance on private vehicles.

In Joburg, Rea Vaya Phase 1A and B routes are cutting carbon emissions by 40 000 tons of carbon dioxide equivalent a year. Rea Vaya buses run in their own uncongested corridors and consume less fuel per person moved, including being on schedule to get commuters to their destinations safely on time.

On Saturday, 26 October 2024, the Transport Department will host a Driver Appreciation event from 9am at the Metrobus Ferndale Depot in Randburg. The best-performing mass transport transit drivers will be recognised and celebrated at this annual awards ceremony. The drivers are chosen from Metrobus, Rea Vaya, Putco, Prasa, SANWIT, Gauteng Women in Transport and Litsamaiso.
