Danny Jordaan speaks to a selected media

17 January 2019 – SAFA President, senior NEC members and CEO, on Thursday held a breakfast briefing with senior editors from leading mainstream media from both print and broadcasting.

Dr Danny Jordaan touched on various issues including the 2010 FIFA World Cup funds and shared SAFA’s clean audits which he said were there for the public to peruse.

In a meeting at SAFA House with the Editors, Dr Jordaan started by paying tribute to the late Phil ‘Chippa’ Masinga who succumbed to cancer at the age of 49 at a Johannesburg hospital last Sunday.

He said Masinga was one of the several players who played at the highest level and who helped the country win the 1996 Africa Cup of Nations on home soil.

He said what made the class of 1996 different from the current crop of players was that most of the players then used to command regular places with top European sides. SAFA is however, working flat out to build strong junior teams to kick start building a strong Senior National Team.

After observing a moment of silence, Dr Jordaan said Chippa was a football person through and through and like a true soldier, died with his boots on.

“He was currently the deputy president of the SA Master and Legend FA and was involved in various football development initiatives.

“In short, Masinga was a true football icon,” he said.

The SAFA hierarchy told the media about the ongoing broadcasting negotiations with the SABC which had further been complicated by the ICASA recent ruling which most sporting bodies were still deliberating on.

SAFA had however completed renewal sponsorship negotiations with SASOL for another 5 years together with new sponsors OUTsurance and clothing company D’S Damat.

Dr Jordaan said the media must report on facts not about their own feelings adding the local media had defeated the international media leading up to the 2010 FIFA World Cup. The international media then were hell-bent on demonising this country’s security and the country’s state of preparedness.

He said he found it unfortunate that there were still some people who were talking of him as having received a warrant of arrest and as someone who could not travel anywhere in the world. He said these flagrant lies had not been corrected for long.

He showed the media that he had recently been to the USA, Europe and Asia on SAFA and CAF business but some were still intent on peddling lies that he is banned from travelling overseas.

The SAFA President said the issue of 2010 matter was thoroughly investigated and it was found out that there was nothing amiss from South Africa’s point of view.
