De sa joins Maritzburg

De Sa takes charge of the Team of Choice

Maritzburg United Football Club announced the arrival of head coach Roger De Sa at a press conference at the Harry Gwala Stadium on Tuesday morning.

The 52-year-old former Bidvest Wits, Orlando Pirates and Ajax Cape Town head coach will be assisted by Fadlu Davids, who stood in as caretaker after the departure of Ernst Middendorp at the end of November last year.

Team of Choice chairman Farook Kadodia thanked Davids for his efforts and welcomed De Sa, a coach he has held in high esteem for many years.

“Credit to Fadlu Davids and the rest of the technical team on doing a wonderful job after Middendorp’s departure,” said Kadodia.

“It was important for us to carefully select this appointment. Fadlu Davids did an impeccable job in keeping the team in the top eight. Roger and I go back 10 years in football business. We have a coach who we believe has great quality.

“Roger and I have a long standing relationship. There was a time when I wanted him here, but he was contracted somewhere else and I had to respect that,” said Kadodia.

“We were looking for a coach who will establish development structures for young talent as there is abundance of it in KZN. The mandate remains what we resolved from the beginning of the season, which is to end up high in the top eight and to go far in a cup competition.”

De Sa, who reached the 2013 CAF Champions League final with Pirates and won the MTN8 with Ajax, inherits a team in eighth position. He spoke of his excitement at working with a talented squad and at being part of a well-supported club.

“Given my relationship with the chairman this was always going to happen at some stage. I had a few offers, I’m happy to be here,” he said.

“Exciting times for me. The target is to first get to 30 points, but we want more than that. We want to compete.

“The club has a good squad. It also has the best fan bases in the country. They get behind this team in a big way.”
