Polokwane City beat Cape Town City 2-0 at Newlands Stadium on Saturday afternoon, as the defending MTN8 champions crashed out of this year’s tournament at the quarterfinal stage.
Mohammed Anas and Charlton Mashumba found the back of the net on either side of the break to lead Rise and Shine to a memorable win in the Mother City.
The visitors opened the scoring in the 25th minute through Anas. Themba Chauke picked out the Ghanaian forward who opened up his body before curling the ball past the outstretched arms of Peter Leeuwenburgh and into the back of the net.
Rise and Shine were handed a golden chance to double their lead in the 63rd minute after Abbubaker Mobara bundled Lesiba Nku over in the box.

Sibusiso Mbonani, who scored an own goal in the same competition against the same opponents two years ago, stepped up to the spot, but failed to beat Leeuwenburgh who dove to his right to deny the Polokwane defender.
The respite breathed new life into the hosts who pushed forward in search of the equaliser, but Mashumba rose off the bench to deliver the killer blow in the 84th minute; firing home against the run of play.
Edmilson Dove finally had the ball in the back of the net for the Citizens in second-half stoppage-time, but the assistant’s flag was raised for offside.
Puleng Tlolane then squandered a chance to put the cherry on the cake, guiding his attempt wide with the goal at his mercy, but it mattered little as the visitors booked their spot in the final four.
