The Bank has installed a total of 900 of the 1000 ATMs with UPS systems since November 2023
Since FNB announced its plans to improve the operational resilience of its ATM network across the country by installing over 1,000 standalone ATMs with Uninterruptible Power Supply (UPS) systems, the bank confirmed it has now installed UPS systems at 900 ATMs, with 100 more installations planned for roll-out by the end of June 2024. This means FNB customers will be able access services even during power outages.
This progress is in line with the Bank’s efforts to grow its presence and investment in local communities. The first phase of the project began in November 2023 with the successful installations at 300 ATMs by the end of the year.
CEO of FNB Personal Segment, Lytania Johnson, says, “We’re focused on providing service that is helpful, easy, and safe, ATMs remain crucial in ensuring that our customers have access to financial services without having to visit the nearest branch. We value the millions of customers that use digital channels such as our FNB App, Online banking, and Cellphone banking to conveniently access most services, while many prefer ATMs to perform an array of activities for their day-to-day financial needs. Therefore, it is essential that we invest and place the right mechanisms for our devices to be always accessible.”
Zibu Nqala, CEO of FNB Points of Presence, adds, “Our standalone ATMs remain top priority as they are frequently located in areas with no backup power. The investment and installation of UPS systems is a crucial step in improving our operational resilience and mitigating the impact of power outages, such as loadshedding, on our customers. Our ATMs will be able to operate for at least four hours during interruptions in power, allowing customers to access services during both planned and unplanned outages.”
FNB aims to have 90% of all South African ATMs covered by alternate and back-up power supply by 2024. As part of our strategic efforts to demonstrating the organisation’s dedication to operational resilience and energy efficiency, the majority of FNB branches already have back-up power solutions in place to maintain service availability during power outages.
