FNB HIGHLIGHTS MEN’S HEALTH IN THE FIGHT AGAINST CANCER

Prostrate cancer affects one in 16 South African men, making it the most prevalent cancer amongst males in the country. Positively and over the years, testicular cancer has seen a high five-year survival rate of nearly 98%*, thanks to advancements in treatment. However, with all cases of testicular cancer being treatable, raising awareness about these conditions, is essential for promoting early detection and proactive health measures.

Movember is more than a global movement – it’s a call to action for all men to prioritise and become aware of health issues like prostrate, testicular cancer and mental health issues which has become an important step towards promoting and improving wellness among men. Additionally, it’s important for men to consider their financial preparedness for unplanned and unexpected life events.

Lee Bromfield, CEO of FNB Insure says, “facing a cancer diagnosis can be overwhelming for the patient and family – physically, emotionally, and financially. The toll of such news compounded by the cost of care, highlights the importance of being financially prepared, which will ensure peace of mind during these challenging times.”

Given the importance of helping our clients fight any critical illness, FNB has paid out significant claims over the past year, illustrating the growing need for financial solutions that can help with health challenges.

Bromfield says, “Through our Health Cash Plan, the bank disbursed over R62 million between September 2023 to August 2024, thus easing the financial burden on day-to-day household expenses as a result of being hospitalised, with approximately 10 million paid out through our Critical Illness Cover, covering treatments for conditions as a result of cancer and other pre-defined critical conditions*. In addition, our growing Gap Cover product helps bridge the gap between medical aid shortfalls and co-payments for actual costs approved for cancer treatments, ensuring comprehensive support.”

The journey to recovery post cancer often comes with emotional and financial cost. Our data reveals that health challenges not only strain finances but also place immense pressure on mental wellbeing. Depression, anxiety, and fear of the unknown are common amongst patients and families going through this challenge. Addressing these concerns holistically is essential to ensuring that our clients feel supported on all fronts.

Movember serves as a reminder to prioritize men’s health. Health is wealth and preparation is key. “We urge all clients to prioritize their well-being by taking small steps, schedule regular health screenings; ensure your health and financial safety nets are in place and seek mental support when needed. By combining proactive health measures and being financially prepared, we aim to reduce this burden on our clients and help them face life uncertainties with resilience and peace of mind,” concludes Bromfield.
