“FNB IS A SPECIAL PLACE FOR ME”-RIVEIRO

The final Soweto Derby at FNB Stadium this season is set to write another thrilling chapter in South Africa’s most iconic football rivalry, as Orlando Pirates gear up to face Kaizer Chiefs in the 108th edition of this historic fixture.

More than just bragging rights are at stake — Saturday’s clash comes at a crucial moment in the Betway Premiership, with both teams aiming for a strong finish in the league. For Orlando Pirates head coach José Riveiro, the match holds added emotional weight. It will be his final league Soweto Derby at FNB Stadium before the two sides meet again in the Nedbank Cup final next weekend.

Having claimed a 1-0 victory in the first leg earlier this season, the Buccaneers will be looking to complete the double over their rivals and build momentum heading into the business end of the campaign.

Speaking during the pre-match press conference, Riveiro reflected on the significance of the Derby and the impact South African football has had on his life.

“Personally, it has changed my life. I am impressed with the league- not only my players. It’s nice to have such talented players. I tell them all the time that they make me happy having to manage such talent.”

While the occasion is a personal milestone, Riveiro emphasized the importance of bouncing back after recent results and delivering a performance worthy of the supporters. We are looking for victory. That’s important for us and the fans. We need to get back on track.”

On the pressure surrounding Derby Day, Riveiro remained calm and focused. “We understand the responsibility — we are a winning team.” As the coach prepares for his final league Derby at the iconic venue, the Spaniard shared a heartfelt message:

“This is my last derby at FNB. It’s a special place — not only for me but for the players as well.”
