The Gauteng Provincial Government projects that, over the next three years, the tourism sector will generate over R120 billion from international visitors and R50 billion from domestic tourism, creating more than 10 000 jobs.
A key component in achieving these targets is hosting major events such as the DSTV Delicious Food and Music Festival, which took place this past weekend (21 and 22 September) at the Kyalami Grand Prix Circuit.
The festival, a unique cultural experience, drew music lovers from across the globe, reinforcing Gauteng’s status as a premier tourist destination.
It also provided a platform for small, micro, and medium enterprises (SMMEs) to participate in a market hosted by Proudly South Africa.
This initiative included entrepreneurs from townships, informal settlements, and other key areas, offering them an opportunity to showcase their products, network with established brands, and gain exposure through the Trader Academy.
Gauteng Online spoke to the local clothing brand, Boys of Soweto, which expressed gratitude for the marketing opportunity provided by the event.
“Soweto is rich in land and the number of people there. A high concentration of people also interact with their township through fashion.
“There is an appetite for this brand as people are proud of the township and the potential for entrepreneurial opportunities waiting to be explored,” said the representative.
The market featured a variety of stalls, ranging from jewellery and fashion to food. One standout is the Ntozinhle fashion brand, which captivated attendees with its stunning display of beaded necklaces, chunky bracelets, and statement jewellery.
Fashion enthusiasts were spoiled for choice, finding unique pieces to add a touch of township flair to their wardrobes.
On the music front, this year’s festival also paid tribute to South African music legends, celebrating 30 years of creative freedom.
A special tribute show featured performance by the children of late icons Hugh Masekela, Sibongile Khumalo, Mandoza and Johnny Clegg, who took the audience on a nostalgic journey through South Africa’s rich musical heritage.
The festival is part of Gauteng’s Tourism Month activities, led by Gauteng Tourism, and aims to expand beyond a two-day celebration. It is central to the province’s #VisitGAUTENGZwakala campaign, designed to attract more tourists and stimulate economic growth.
Through the VisitGAUTENG Zwakala campaign, the provincial government is determined to bid for and host high-impact significant events in the categories of sport, arts, culture, and Meetings, Incentives, Conferences, and Exhibitions (MICE) to bring back the spirit of making Gauteng the destination of choice.
