HEINEKEN Beverages, in partnership with the Johannesburg Metropolitan Police Department (JMPD), successfully launched its annual Road Safety Festive Season Campaign under the banner MZANSI, DRIVE SAFELY.
The event, which aimed to raise awareness about safe driving practices and the importance of responsible driving behaviour on South Africa’s roads, marked the beginning of a new initiative to ensure safer roads during the festive season.
“We are proud to take another step in fostering a culture of road safety and responsible driving,” said Millicent Maroga, Director of Corporate Affairs at HEINEKEN Beverages. “This campaign is part of our ongoing commitment to reducing road accidents and preventing unnecessary loss of life. By collaborating with our partners, local authorities, and communities, we are confident that we can make a lasting impact on road safety across South Africa.”
The launch event brought together key industry stakeholders, local authorities, and community leaders, all of whom were united in their shared goal of promoting safe driving practices.

Acting Deputy Director Mike Botolo “We encourage all South Africans to take this message to heart, not just during the festive season, but throughout the year. Road safety is everyone’s responsibility.”
Adding her voice to the campaign, Mokebe Thulo, CEO of AWARE.org, emphasised the critical link between responsible alcohol consumption and road safety: “We must recognise that responsible alcohol consumption plays a vital role in keeping our roads safe,” she said. “While the Department of Transport has reported a commendable 15% drop in road fatalities since 2010, this progress can easily be reversed by reckless and irresponsible behaviour. Through initiatives like MZANSI, DRIVE SAFELY, we remind South Africans that every choice they make—whether it’s drinking responsibly or choosing a designated driver—can save lives and safeguard the strides we’ve made as a nation.”
The HEINEKEN Beverages MZANSI, DRIVE SAFELY Road Safety Campaign is now in full swing and will be rolling out across numerous provinces, starting with activations in Gauteng (Maponya Mall and Mall of Africa). The focus remains on engaging the public, raising awareness, and encouraging responsible driving habits that will help ensure safer roads throughout the holiday season and beyond.
