HIGHLANDS BREAK WINLESS RUN WITH CITY WIN

Highlands Park ended their winless run in the Absa Premiership with a 2-0 win over Cape Town City at Makhulong Stadium in Tembisa on Saturday afternoon.

Peter Shalulile and Tendai Ndoro found the back of the net for the Lions of the North who move up to ninth place on the log standings, a point behind City who remain in eighth spot after 12 rounds of fixtures.

The hosts registered the first shot on target with 12 minutes on the clock with Denzil Haoseb finding his range early on. The Namibian, though, was denied by the impressive Peter Leeuwenburgh who was on his toes to deny the midfielder.

The Citizens were finding it difficult to get in behind Lions of the North’s defensive line on a hot day in Gauteng and when Ayanda Patosi finally fired a shot in anger in the 38th minute, it was straight at Marlon Heugh who made an easy save.

Highlands broke the deadlock six minutes into the second-half through Shalulile who fired the hosts in front for his first goal of the season. Lindokuhle Mbatha teed up his fellow attacker who made no mistake from close range.

City duly pushed forward in search of the equaliser and went close through captain Thamsanqa Mkhize and Roland Putsche within the space of two minutes, but both watched their respective shots fly over the crossbar.

Ndoro rose off the bench with 15 minutes of regulation time remaining and made the desired impact, doubling the hosts lead in the 84th minute.

The former Ajax Cape Town striker with a composed finish as the Lions of the North ultimately held on for all three points; duly bringing an end to City’s winning run.
