“I’ M LOOKING TO ADD VALUE HOLISTICALLY TO USUTHU”- LENTJIES

AmaZulu DDC’s newly appointed head coach Kurt Lentjies has shared his excitement at the prospect of leading the club’s young prospects alongside Bafana Bafana legend Thabo Mngomeni.

Lentjies expressed his enthusiasm for the new challenge, describing the opportunity as a significant step in his coaching journey.

“I’m thrilled to be here and excited about the opportunity to take the club to the next level. While I haven’t coached in KwaZulu-Natal before, I know the football culture well from my playing days. I’ve previously served as head coach as well at Chippa United like two to three years ago and later worked at FC Ravens in the ABC Motsepe League, so this is another important step in a different environment,” said Lentjies.

The 40-year-old added that his focus will be on nurturing talent and aligning the reserve side with the club’s broader vision.

“I’m happy to work with the players currently here. The first team is doing well, and we want to follow that example. The boys have the desire and the ambition to reach that level, and my role is to guide and support them. They are talented players, and I’m looking to add value holistically — on and off the field — particularly in terms of behaviour and professionalism.”

Speaking on his working relationship with assistant coach Thabo Mngomeni, Lentjies highlighted a long-standing bond built on mutual trust and respect.

“It’s a fantastic working relationship. I actually requested to work with Thabo at my previous club as well. He was my coach back when I was a 22-year-old in the First Division at Ikapa Sporting, so we’ve shared a strong bond since then. I know exactly what he brings as an assistant coach.”

Lentjies also pointed to Mngomeni’s experience at national level as a key asset to the squad.

“He has worked with the national Under-17 team and brings valuable experience. Having someone like that around is great for the boys, and I believe it will benefit their development immensely.”

AmaZulu have a stern test this Sunday as they host Asidlali log leaders Orlando Pirates. The game is at Mpumalanga Stadium in Hammarsdale on Sunday at 15:00.
