JOBURG MARKET BOOSTS WORKPLACE SAFETY THROUGH EMS-LED TRAINING

Sithobekile Masola

The Joburg Market is reaffirming its commitment to employee well-being and workplace safety through a series of focused training sessions facilitated by the City of Johannesburg Emergency Management Services.

Spearheaded by the Market’s Training and Development Department, the initiative equips First Aiders, Fire Marshalls, and SHE Representatives with the essential knowledge to identify hazards, assess risks, and foster a culture of safety.

In today’s session, participants tackled practical modules on the legal duties of SHE Reps, conducting workplace inspections, incident reporting, and participating in Health and Safety Committee meetings. The training also emphasised accident prevention, compliance with the Occupational Health and Safety Act, and promoting overall staff wellness.

“SHE Reps are the eyes and ears of the organisation when it comes to safety,” said Gadifele Matsepe, a City of Johannesburg EMS facilitator. “Their proactive role is key to identifying risks early and preventing incidents.”

This training is part of a broader series that also includes sessions for First Aiders and Fire Marshals, all hosted at the Joburg Market. The programme aims to strengthen emergency preparedness and embed a safety-first approach in daily operations.

As the programme continues, the Joburg Market remains focused on creating a safe, empowered working environment—setting a benchmark for health, safety, and environmental responsibility in the public sector.
