Dan Bradbury, a professional golfer from England has won the 2022 Joburg Open International Golf Tournament at the Houghton Golf Club after posting a successful showdown this week.
Bradbury was overjoyed as he held the gleaming trophy following his victory on Sunday, November 27.
“It hasn’t sunk in yet,” he said, smiling. Bradbury’s mother congratulated him on his victory and hugged him, saying, “I’m so proud of you”.
Bradbury played a consistent game from the first day of the tournament on Thursday, November 24, and his name remained at the top of the leader board throughout the four-day event on the lush fairways of the Houghton Golf course.
He was overjoyed with his performance and described winning the Joburg Open 2022 as “amazing”.
“Right now, it feels pretty good. It’s an incredible sensation. I was even more impressed by the course and the weather. The golf course is beautiful and in excellent condition,” Bradbury added.
He said Johannesburg and the prestigious Houghton golf course had captured his heart.
“Johannesburg is now without a doubt one of my favourite cities in the world. My mother was able to visit this week, and my father is at home dog-sitting. He’s missing out, but I’m sending him a special shoutout,” he said.
Bradbury finished with five birdies and a total of 21 under par. He faced stiff competition from Sami Valimaki, who finished second with 18 under par. Christiaan Bezuidenhout and Daniel van Tonder tied for third place.
Cllr Mpho Phalatse, the Executive Mayor, praised Bradbury for a great game and thanked all of the sponsors who helped make the tournament a success.
“I am incredibly grateful to our partners and sponsors for hosting a world-class tournament in our lovely city. Joburg is a global city. We now have a City ambassador in England; congratulations to the winner, Dan Bradbury, and all the golfers who visited our City and competed in this year’s Joburg Open,” Mayor Phalatse said.
Bongi Mokaba, the City’s Director of Events Management, was overjoyed that the weather held on the tournament’s final day.
“I was concerned that we wouldn’t be able to finish the tournament on time after experiencing delays due to hazardous weather conditions in the first round. However, the heavens listened to my prayers, and we were able to resume and complete the second round yesterday. The crucial point is that we finished at 2pm, the event is over, and I can now go home and unwind,” said Mokaba.
The Joburg Open International Golf Tournament is co-sanctioned by the Sunshine Tour and the World DP Tour. The winner of this year’s tournament is automatically qualified to compete in the 151st Open Championship, which is scheduled to take place at the Royal Liverpool Golf Course in July 2023.
