Chippa United beat Baroka FC 1-0 at Bidvest Stadium on Saturday evening to move six points clear of the relegation zone in the Absa Premiership.
Augustine Kwem scored the decisive goal early in the first half to lead the Chilli Boys up to 12th place on the log standings. The defeat leaves Baroka in 14th place, a mere point above Limpopo rivals Polokwane City and the drop zone.
The only goal of the game came with seven minutes on the clock. Diamond Thopola played a precise through-ball into the path of Kwem who timed his run to perfection before sliding the ball past the onrushing Elvis Chipezeze in the Bakgaga goal.
Baroka pushed forward in search of the equaliser and almost pulled level on the cusp of halftime. Veli Mothwa had done well to save the initial effort, but the Chippa goalkeeper almost fluffed Manuel Kambala’s follow up shot into the back of his own net.
Chippa were happy to sit back and protect their lead after the break and Baroka found it increasingly difficult to break down the Chilli Boys defence and the Eastern Cape club ultimately held on for all three points, as Lehlohonolo Seema claimed his first win as head coach of the club..
Next up for Baroka is a tough trip to Dobsonville Stadium to take on Mamelodi Sundowns next Sunday. Chippa are in action again on Friday, away to Stellenbosch FC in Pretoria.
