LILIAN NGOYI STREET FINALLY REOPENS TO TRAFFIC

The Johannesburg Roads Agency (JRA) is pleased to announce that Lilian Ngoyi Street will officially reopen to traffic on Friday, 12 September 2025, following the successful completion of Phase 1 of the Rehabilitation Project. The newly reconstructed section, between Loveday and End streets, will operate as a one-way eastbound road.

Road Re-openings and Closures

  • Fully open intersections: Rissik, Joubert, Eloff, Von Brandis, and Wanderers streets.
  • Continued closures: Access to and from Loveday Street and Kruis Street at Lilian Ngoyi Street will remain closed until further notice.

This milestone reflects JRA’s commitment to delivering a safe, integrated and liveable inner city, aligned with Johannesburg’s Inner-city Transport Master Plan. The redesigned corridor supports a multi-modal transport system that balances the needs of motorists, pedestrians, cyclists and public transport users.

Important Safety Information

For motorists:

  • Obey traffic signals: Running red lights can cause serious collisions.
  • Adjust speed and merge safely: Pay attention to new lane configurations.
  • Yield to pedestrians: Always stop for pedestrians with a “walk” signal and check crosswalks before turning.
  • Share the road: Expect increased pedestrian activity and allow space for public transport vehicles pulling out from stops.

For pedestrians and cyclists:

  • Use new facilities: Walk on the widened sidewalks and cross only at designated crossings.
  • Avoid jaywalking: Crossing illegally creates unexpected risks for drivers and yourself.

For public transport commuters:

  • Routes return to normal: Services will resume their usual configurations – please check updated layouts.

The upgraded Lilian Ngoyi Street not only improves safety and efficiency but also boosts accessibility for nearby businesses, residents and visitors, enhancing the overall vibrancy of the inner city.

JRA and the Johannesburg Metro Police Department will closely monitor the road after reopening, adjusting signal timings and enforcing by-laws where necessary to ensure smooth traffic flow and safe pedestrian movement.

Phase 2 of the Rehabilitation Project, including details of further traffic impacts and diversions, will be communicated in the coming weeks.

The JRA thanks all residents, commuters and businesses for their patience and cooperation during construction. Together, we can make Lilian Ngoyi Street a model of safety and efficiency in Johannesburg.
