Maritzburg United stunned Cape Town City 1-0 in an Absa Premiership match at the Harry Gwala Stadium in Pietermaritzburg on Monday.

The victory sees the Team of Choice remain seventh on the league table, while the Citizens also remain second on the standings.

The match got off to a lively start with the Team of Choice enjoying more possession in the opening stages of the encounter.

City goalkeeper Shu-Aib Walters was called into action twice in the first 10 minutes of the game and he denied both Mondli Dlamini and Lebohang Maboe.

But Maritzburg were forced to try their luck from range as the Citizens defence was solid and Dlamini also had his long range effort miss the target in the 21st minute.

With his side struggling, City coach Eric Tinkler made a tactical change in the 36th minute – pulling out Bhongolethu Jayiya for Sibusiso Masina.

The Citizens were able to contain the Team of Choice in the remaining minutes of the first-half and the score was 0-0 during the halftime break.

Maritzburg coach Fadlu Davids made his first change 10 minutes after the restart – introducing Andrea Fileccia for Mohau Mokate.

Belgian striker Fileccia tried to make an immediate impact in the 62nd minute, but his effort missed the target as Maritzburg continued to dominate.

The Citizens had a late chance in the 76th minute and it fell for Aubrey Ngoma, but Kwanda Mngonyama did a great defensive block to deny the former.

City were made to rue that missed chance as Kurt Lentjies scored with a beautiful free-kick in the 84th minute to hand Maritzburg a 1-0 win at home.
