A game featuring top of the top teams in topflight football is coming up when Mamelodi Sundowns visit Kaizer Chiefs at the FNB Stadium on Saturday evening in the quarterfinals of the Carling Knockout Cup clash.
The Pretoria-based side last met the Glamour Boys a little over a month ago for a league fixture where they won 2-1 in a sold-out affair. They will look to have a repeat result in the same venue, as they aim to turbocharge their pursuit of a place in the Carling Knockout Challenge semifinals.
Speaking at the Carling Knockout Cup press conference on Thursday afternoon, senior coach, Steve Komphela previewed what will be a mouthwatering clash, stating that it will be another tough meeting between the two sides.
“It’s going to be an exciting match and already, the fact that it will be ‘round two’ people can have some sort of expectation. There’s more of a measure based on what happened a couple of weeks back and it was an exciting match. It was a packed stadium with great environment and ambience, so we expect the same the same on Saturday,” he stated.
Coming from a victory on Wednesday against another strong team, Masandawana will look to register another win to seal the week. Coach Steve admitted that it won’t be a walk in the park despite their opponents being wounded. In fact, he anticipates a Kaizer Chiefs side that will apply pressure throughout the season and make the games exciting.
“They do have their strengths and they have their weaknesses. But there has been a significant element of belief, positiveness; there’s aura and there’s energy you feel. That energy comes from the results they acquired and how they see things unfolding,” he said.
“There’s hope that this thing is going to click and it’s good to see that because when that happens it puts everybody under pressure. All the teams in the league will wish they’re at the top spot so that they will buck up knowing Chiefs are coming,”coach Steve continued.
Coach Steve concluded by stating how important it will be to score goals on Saturday. Furthermore, he mentioned the role that goalscoring plays in matches.
“When teams score it also invites supporters, because in all honesty the chaos and the noise in a game of football is all about how you enter the opponent’s box and score. The more entries, the more threats, the more goals and people will love that game,” he stated
“People support teams that score goals. For the game of football in South Africa to attract more fans, we need to score more goals. At the end of the day, you pay your money to go watch goals. The excitement of goals is just a must in any football match,” he concluded.
Mamelodi Sundowns will clash against Kaizer Chiefs in a cup blockbuster on Saturday at the FNB Stadium. Kick-off is scheduled for 18H00, live on SuperSport.
