MISS SOUTH AFRICA 2017 DEMI-LEIGH NEL PETERS AND SUN INTERNATIONAL’S THE MASLOW HOTEL DELIVERS BLANKETS AND A POP-UP SOUP KITCHEN TO KEEP IKAGENG WARM THIS WINTER
Temperatures are expected to plummet to early digits in July when the cold season reaches its frosty peak on the Highveld.
As the mid-winter freeze deepens, The Maslow Hotel – an urban retreat in the heart of Sandton – has committed to spread a little warmth to those in greatest need in and around Johannesburg and Pretoria.
This initiative will take the form of a roving soup kitchen from which 300 people will be fed three times a week for the month of July. Also, to help keep the cold at bay, 300 blankets will be handed out to indigents wherever the kitchen on wheels stops.
The first pop-up soup kitchen at the Orlando West (Soweto) community centre, Ikageng, on July 5. The Maslow has committed to feed, and keep warm, 1000’s of people in the month of July: soup will be served and blankets handed out at various locations across Johannesburg and Pretoria on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays.
The Maslow Executive Chef, Garth Johnson said his team will prepare a nutritious meat and vegetable soup to be served at selected community centres.
“We will be making a hearty beef soup with chunky vegetables. Our soup will be of restaurant quality – every effort will be put into making the meals we serve during the month of July delicious and nutritious.”
Maslow General Manager Ashwin Jose said: “The community centres that our pop-up soup kitchen will visit cater to the needs of all vulnerable people in those neighbourhoods – orphans, young adults, child headed households, the elderly and the sick.“In this way we at The Maslow believe we are reaching those most in need over this period.”
He added that he and his team at The Maslow were committed to helping make a difference, “especially at a time when the temperatures outside are punishingly low”.
