MAYOR PHALATSE FIRES CEREMONIAL TEE SHOT TO SET JOBURG OPEN IN MOTION

The Executive Mayor of Johannesburg,  Mpho Phalatse, has fired the ceremonial tee shot to officially set the 2022 Joburg Open International Golf Tournament in motion on the pristine fairways of the Houghton Golf Club.

Wishing all golfers involved the best of luck in battling it out for top honours come Sunday, 27 November, Mayor Phalatse said the Joburg Open affirmed the City’s ability to host mega sporting events of international stature, with massive TV viewership from across the world.

“We know that golf courses are where business deals are struck. So, we believe that this is the place where we are going to talk about how we are going to build, repair, and grow the City as well as attract investment,” said Mayor Phalatse on the morning of Thursday, 24 November.

After launching the first tee, Mayor Phalatse said she hoped the tournament would attract international investors to Johannesburg.

“We have world-class courses and that presents us with the opportunity to boost our economy, particularly in the tourism sector. We are the economic hub of the country and the entire continent,” she added.

Hosted by the City of Johannesburg, the Joburg Open is one of the most prestigious golf tournaments on the Sunshine Tour and DP World Tour schedules.

“I am delighted to officially start the 2022 Joburg Open. We are excited to host global events such as this prestigious tournament. Over fifty countries will be watching this showpiece in Johannesburg, so we are also looking forward to showcasing our beautiful city.”

Following the lifting of Covid-19 public health restrictions on movement, the tournament is expected to experience a full return of spectators, unlike the previous two editions.

“Golf is a loved sport in Johannesburg,” she said.

Mayor Phalatse expressed sincere gratitude and appreciation to the Sunshine Tour and the DP World Tour, the tournament sponsors, and the organisers for pulling off such a superlative event.

“We call upon investors to visit, work and play in our beautiful City of opportunities,” she said.
