MMC KUNENE  LAUNCHES OPERATION RESTORE WITH PROMISE TO FIX ROADS, IMPROVE SAFETY

The streets of Ivory Park came alive with renewed hope on Wednesday, 18 February 2026, as the Member of the Mayoral Committee for Transport in the City of Johannesburg, Cllr Kenny Kunene, officially launched Operation Restore at the corner of Riverside and Limpopo roads. Joined by ward councillors, municipal officials, and local residents, MMC Kunene set the tone for what he described as a decisive intervention to rebuilding infrastructure and restoring residents’ dignity.

Operation Restore is rolling out across wards 133, 77, 78, 110, 92, 111, 112 and 132. From deep potholes and failing road surfaces to blocked drainage systems and pedestrian safety concerns, the Johannesburg Roads Agency (JRA) teams are moving in with a clear mandate: fix it, restore it, and make it safer.

Among the key interventions are the repair and rehabilitation of Riverside Road, installation of subsurface drainage along June Road, painting of pedestrian crossings in high-traffic zones, and urgent road safety upgrades on Belvedere Road. Crews are also clearing blocked stormwater systems, resurfacing damaged sections, patching potholes and repainting road markings to improve visibility and compliance.

Work has already begun on Thulare Street, where underground water seepage has been steadily eroding the road surface. Contractors are installing subsoil drainage pipes to prevent future deterioration and extend the lifespan of the road. Along 16th June Road, a new stormwater kerb inlet is under construction to control runoff and prevent flooding, while surface patching is underway in several sections.

Kunene said Operation Restore represents action, not promises. “Operation Restore means we restore pride, we restore safety, and we restore mobility for our people. Ivory Park deserves quality roads, proper drainage, and safe streets for our children. This is just the beginning; we are fixing what has been broken and we are doing it with urgency.”

Residents welcomed the intervention, noting that poor road conditions and flooding have long made commuting difficult and walking dangerous, particularly for pupils and the elderly.
