RETURN LEG A ‘CLEAN SLATE’ FOR MARITZBURG

Maritzburg United will not allow any complacency to set in despite appearing to have the advantage of an away goal in their MTN8 second leg semi-final clash with SuperSport United, says Team of Choice captain Denis Weidlich.

The Team of Choice head into Saturday’s second leg semi-final at the Harry Gwala Stadium (20H15) locked at 1-1 with Matsatsantsa after the first leg match two weeks back.

As such, a 0-0 draw would see us through to the final. But for Weidlich and his compatriots, any such thoughts will be put out of mind as they focus solely on winning Saturday’s match.

“I don’t think we should look much at what happened two weeks ago, I think we should just focus on this game. Yes we scored the away goal that that we needed, but we’re not thinking about that,” the German told the club’s official website.

“We just want to take what we have been working on in training into the game and put up the kind of performance we know we can.

“For most of us, and since I have been in this country, we have not been in this situation in the semi-final leg, having a good chance to make the final. But we are not there yet, this cup is all about winning, we must go all out to try and reach the final,” he added.

Weidlich believes that the Team of Choice are a growing power in South African soccer, but cautions that the players must continue to give their all in order to maintain the standards.

“We all know there are bigger brands in the league, but I think the way we have been playing this season has attracted many people to the team,” he said. “Now we have to try and keep it up, to keep those standards, whether at home or away.

“The style of football, we have been showing other teams in the league, that ‘hey, this Maritzburg might be a small name, but on the pitch we are all chasing the same ball’. Any team that thinks it’s going to be easy against us will be in for a surprise.”-PSL WEBSITE.
