Basadi Award 2024 newcomer nominee, Nano Mothibi, has returned for her third meteoric dance project in as many years called Phakama Njalo, dropping on Friday 15 August 2025 12:00.
Affectionately known as Nano, she has graced Afro-Soul lovers with her Nubiansoundcocktail debuting her first album Nubian Establishment in 2023 and Nubian Trilogy in 2024.
Phakama Njalo is part of an EP project called Butterfly whose tracks will be dropped in cumulation across the upcoming Sout African spring season.
The tracks, kept under wraps are said to offer a mix of Afro tech, Amapiyano, Soul and even Smooth Jazz – a classic Nubian cocktail style.
“Phakama Njalo was birthed out of both the pain of being an African woman in a land of systematic oppression, patriarchy, GBV and Femicide; and the prophetic courage birthed in my name Nanoga which means Rise up! It stems from my belief that the African woman has an inherent ability to meteorically morph against all odds,” she says.
In this project Nano has collaborated with Iconic Pianist Mlungisi Ngomane known as Pax the Pianist and Kasi’s favorite producer Nkosinathi Mashiyane known as Bean MusiQ.
The trio is set to blaze this coming festive groove season with live performances across the Gauteng Province.
Nano has been known for her provocative, colorful, and soulful celebration of the African continent. The colorful sounds, known as Nubian Sound Cocktails delve into various modern cultural key points, weaving a powerful narrative that heralds a new, long-awaited golden era for the motherland.
She has been known to blend the Afro Soul, Dance, Piyano, Ragga and Jazz into enchantingly entertaining melodies. A big champion of the continent’s rich, vast, and infinite heritage and culture, she believes South Africa’s music has become the standard for global popular culture. In addition to her music career, Nano is also an accomplished film and documentary producer, a published author and thespian.
Her book, “Not Great but Alive,” was published three years ago, and her on and off screen work continues to expand, showcasing her versatility and creative prowess.
Her ability to blend diverse musical genres into a cohesive and vibrant sound is winning her acclaim and admiration from fans and industry insiders alike. Nano’s journey is one of passion, resilience, and an unwavering dedication to her craft.
