7 December 2017 – A bitter battle will ensue at the Tokyo Sexwale stadium in Jeffery’s Bay on Saturday, 9 December when WITS FC will be hosting EC Bees in the Eastern Cape Nedbank Cup qualifier.
The match, which will kick-off at 3pm, will see Wits, who are the SAB League winners, and Bees, who are the ABC Motsepe League champions, vie for a precious spot in South Africa’s biggest league cup competition .
In making it to the final, Wits fought bitterly to win the SAB League Regional league that took place on Saturday, 25 – Sunday, 26 November 2017 at the same venue.
There is a bigger incentive for the side that will walk away with the trophy in the Eastern Cape as they will stand a chance to represent the Province in the SAFA Mini draw/last 32 in the coming weeks.
Bees are technically the defending champions in the Eastern Cape, as they even went on to play in the main Nedbank Cup last 32 clash against Orlando Pirates at the Sisa Dukashe Stadium earlier this year.
Interestingly for the two sides, Wits, who are in no way related to the Bidvest Wits side that plays in the PSL, have not won any of their three matches enroute to the final in regulation time.
Wits, who are from the small Jeffery’s Bay town just outside Port Elizabeth claimed three victories through the penalty shoot-out. They are under the Kouga Local Football Association, and play in the SAFA SAB Sarah Baartman region.
Wits emerged as the best team in the eight regions of Eastern Cape that were divided into groups, playing knockout football through to the final.
Standing in their way is Bees, who are second on the ABC Motsepe Log in the Eastern Cape. The two teams have no rivalry, as they are situated close to 300km from one another.-SAFA WEBSITE
