As part of the digital transformation strategy, the City of Johannesburg Library and Information Services has introduced digital literacy programme for senior citizens.
Following the successful launch of programme in Murray Park Library, Orange Farm Library introduced more senior citizens to digital literacy. Classes are held every Tuesday. While libraries are not training centres, they play a major role in supporting lifelong learning and personal development of all communities.
Between 10 and 20 senior citizens are trained in basic typing skills and understanding the use of computers for various tasks. This project will later involve participants producing documents that the library will assign to them as a project to showcase their computer skills.
Orange Farm Library Senior Librarian Queen Mhlongo says the “senior citizens have received the programme with excitement, especially after they had attended a book launch in University of Johannesburg, where they witnessed other senior Citizens being celebrated for their participation in a digital literacy programme”.
The Orange Farm library not only empowers senior citizens but it also has been assisting youth to register online for spaces in higher education institutions for 2023 using the eLearning classroom.
