In an effort to widen the pool of people who qualify for future employment in the emergency services sector, the Gauteng Department of Health’s (GDoH) Emergency Medical Services (EMS) is calling on qualifying individuals to apply for a 12-month emergency care internship programme.
There is a total of 1 120 spots available within five health districts (Johannesburg, Tshwane, Ekurhuleni, Sedibeng, and West Rand), providing ample opportunities for aspiring healthcare professionals to contribute to emergency care services.
“Often when employment opportunities arise within the Gauteng EMS, it becomes clear that there are still barriers that prevent many people especially the previously disadvantaged groups from accessing these opportunities.
“Through this drive, we want to make sure that we afford as many people as possible an opportunity to be part of the Green Angels – another name the EMS personnel are known by,” explains Gauteng MEC for Health and Wellness Nomantu Nkomo-Ralehoko.
To qualify for the Green Angels emergency care internship programme, applicants must meet the following requirements:
- They must be in possession of a Grade 12 certificate or an equivalent qualification.
- Current and valid registration with the Health Professions Council of South Africa (HPCSA) as a Basic Ambulance Assistant (BAA), Intermediate Life Support (ILS), Emergency Care Technician (ECT), or Emergency Care Assistant (ECA).
- Candidates will undergo a formal written test and interview as part of the selection process.
- Valid South African identification document.
- A driver’s license (considered an added benefit).
According to the Acting CEO of Gauteng EMS Reuben Ruiters, there will be a helpdesk assistance at various locations to ensure a seamless application process.
“Applicants residing in various districts are encouraged to visit the designated helpdesk locations on the specified dates to receive assistance with their applications. The dedicated staff onsite will be available to provide guidance, answer questions, and ensure a smooth application process,” explains Ruiters.
The helpdesk will operate for a day from 08:00 to 15:00 in the various districts as follows:
- Tshwane District: Monday, 26 February 2024, Stanza Bopape Community Hall, 2 Shilouhane Street, Mamelodi.
- Sedibeng District: Tuesday, 27 February 2024, Vereeniging Civic Centre, Joubert Street, Vereeniging.
- West Rand District: Wednesday, 28 February 2024, Chief Mogale Hall, Kagiso, 1145 Kagiso Drive.
- Ekurhuleni District: Thursday, 29 February 2024, Kobie Muller Hall, Angus Street, Germiston South (Industries E A), Germiston, Ekurhuleni.
- Johannesburg District: Friday, 1 March 2024, Orlando East Community Hall, Mooki Street, Orlando East.
Applicants who are unable to visit the district helpdesks can directly deliver their applications at the Gauteng Emergency Medical Services head office at Continuity SA, Growth Point Business Park, Corner Old Pretoria Road and Tonnetti Street, Midrand or posted to P.O Box 8311 Halfway House, 1685. The application process closes on 08 March 2024.
