Gauteng Premier Panyaza Lesufi and Education MEC Matome Chiloane convened with Grade 12 educators from public schools to outline provincial strategies and offer guidance on enhancing National Senior Certificate learner performance and participation rates.
The meeting was held on Saturday, 16 March 2024, at Rhema Bible Church in Randburg.
Addressing the packed room, Premier Lesufi highlighted the teacher’s pivotal role in shaping education within the province.
“These are the shapers of education in our province.”
The premier acknowledged the educators’ commitment to improving matric results and aligning the education system with current and future economic demands.
“Schools of Specialisations is the future, and it is deliberate because we have repositioned Gauteng’s economy. Here in Gauteng, we are letting go of the economy of the mines,” said Lesufi.
In addition, Education MEC Matome Chiloane expressed gratitude to educators for their tireless efforts and unwavering commitment to learners.
“Let me extend our appreciation for the dedication of all our grade 12 teachers in the province, for your unwavering support to our learners, your ability to profile learners in a subject and then to develop and implement subjects-based intervention programmes to support all categories of learners including progressed and high-risk learners,” he said.
Grade 12 learner Fhatuwani Lapane from Tlhatlogang Secondary School in Soweto delivered a message to peers urging them to study diligently to contribute to improving Gauteng’s educational landscape, particularly in the Johannesburg Central Region.
He also encouraged Grade 12 learners to continue attending the extra classes to help them improve their academic results.
