SEW MUCH POSSIBILITY: CLOVER MAMA AFRIKA MAMAS STITCH THEIR WAY TO THE NEW SKILLS

Clover Mama Afrika hosted a vibrant four-day Sew Fancy course in November, bringing together ten dedicated Mamas — Nomsa Zimema from George in the Western Cape, Dawn Irons Ubombo in Kwa-Zulu Natal, Felicity Maluleke from Soweto and Rina Malan from Pretoria. A few trainees also attended and were sent from various Mamas’ centres across the country  for practical skills development, Claudette Neveling, Itumeleng Masemola, Tshepiso Motau, Endy Nomphelo Tswelekile, Thokozile Ndlovu and Lindiwe Dube.

Presented by sewing expert Linda Venter at Bernina in Auckland Park, the course introduced the Mamas to a delightful range of creative projects, including golf club covers, 2- and 4-bottle wine totes, book covers, unique aprons, tablet stands, fabric plant holders and even quirky car rubbish baggies, among others.

Before the training kicked off, many Mamas weren’t quite sure what to expect from a “Sew Fancy” course, but they arrived eager to learn something new. By the end of the four days, their enthusiasm had multiplied — not only had they mastered new skills, but they were thrilled about the potential to earn an income from their handcrafted items, with hopes of supplying personalised products to small and medium businesses.
