Professional Nurse Lehlohonolo Mokotle is a dedicated healthcare professional at Nokuphila Clinic in Dobsonville Ext 2, Soweto, which is part of the City of Johannesburg’s health network.
A proud Soweto local, Mokotle brings compassion, resilience and experience to his role — embodying the City’s vision of wellness and caring for all residents.
Raised in Pimville, his upbringing under the guidance of a firm mother and nurturing grandmother shaped his values of kindness and responsibility. Mokotle trained at Chris Hani Baragwanath Nursing College, graduating in 2013. Before joining the City’s health services, he worked as a phlebotomist at Lancet Laboratories, gaining technical expertise in blood collection and IV line placement.|
Joining the City just before the Covid-19 pandemic, Mokotle was quickly deployed to the tracing team, demonstrating his commitment to public health during crisis. He continues to serve the community at Nokuphila Clinic with compassion, despite daily challenges.
“There are real issues — staff shortages, lost files, medication delays — but we push on,” he says. “I go home knowing I gave my best.”
Outside work, Mokotle prioritises balance. He enjoys soccer, radio, comedy, and relaxed afternoons at the car wash. He also calls for improvements in nursing education, urging the South African Nursing Council to simplify pathways for aspiring professionals: “People want to study further, but the system can be discouraging.”
Mokotle’s story is a powerful reflection of what caring city health services should be: rooted in people, driven by purpose, and focused on wellness for all.
