STELLENBOSCH CLAIM DERBY BRAGGING RIGHTS V CITY

Stellenbosch FC claimed a 2-1 win over Cape Town City in the DStv Premiership match at the Cape Town Stadium on Saturday afternoon.

The victory took Stellies to 12th place on the league standings, while the Citizens remained seventh on the table.

Both teams launched attacks in the opening proceedings and it was Stellies who broke the deadlock through an unlikely goalscorer in Mogamad De Goede.

The defender netted his first-ever goal in the top-flight league when he fired past City goalkeeper Peter Leeuwenburgh to make it 1-0 to Stellenbosch in the 14th minute.

However, the lead only lasted for nine minutes as Aubrey Ngoma netted his maiden goal since he rejoined the Citizens on loan from Mamelodi Sundowns in October 2020.

Bradley Ralani set-up Aubrey Ngoma, who then controlled the ball, before volleying it past Stellenbosch keeper Sage Stephens to make it 1-1.

Stellenbosch tried to restore their lead and Nathan Sinkala’s well-taken free-kick shaved the top of the crossbar in the 38th minute and the score was 1-1 at the interval.

The Citizens threatened first in the second-half when Ngoma’s effort was brilliantly cleared off the goal-line by Marc Van Heerden following a good run by the City winger.

Stellies then restored their lead almost immediately at the other end when Dean Van Rooyen set-up Ashley Du Preez, who scored with a curling effort to make it 2-1 to Stellenbosch in the 49th minute.

City head coach Jan Olde Riekerink decided to introduce Justin Shonga on the hour-mark as the home side looked to restore parity for the second time on the day.

Riekerink’s counterpart, Steve Barker responded by making a tactical change as he introduced midfielder Phathutshedzo Nange, who replaced attacker Junior Mendieta with 14 minutes left.

The Citizens launched late attacks and Taariq Fielies’ long-range shot was brilliantly parried away by Stephens as Stellies held on for dear life in the closing stages.

Ultimately, Stellenbosch emerged 2-1 winners after containing City, who were unable to grab a late equalising goal.
