STELLENBOSCH HOLD SUPERSPORT IN ATTERIDGEVILLE

  • 30 NOV 2019

Stellenbosch fought back to hold SuperSport United to a 1-1 draw in an Absa Premiership match at the Lucas Moripe Stadium on Saturday night.

The draw saw Matsatsantsa climb up to the second spot on the league standings, while Stellies remained 14th on the log.

The match got off to a lively start with the two teams launching attacks in search of an early goal in the first 15 minutes of the match.

Iqraam Rayners forced South Africa international Ronwen Williams into an early save in the SuperSport goal-posts, before Teboho Mokoena’s free-kick was brilliantly finger-tipped over the crossbar by Stellensbosch shot-stopper Boy de Jong.

SuperSport took control of the match towards the half-hour mark and Kudakwshe Mahachi’s long-range effort hit the upright with De Jong well-beaten.

Thamsanqa Gabuza then connected with Sipho Mbule’s cross nine before halftime, but the Matsatsantsa striker placed his header over the crossbar.

SuperSport and Stellenbosch were locked at 0-0 during the halftime break.

Matsatsantsa were the better side after the restart and they deservedly broke the deadlock through their Zimbabwean winger Mahachi.

The attacker scored with a powerful low shot from outside the box to make it 1-0 to SuperSport much to the delight of the home fans.

However, Steve Barker’s men pushed forward in numbers and they managed to level matters through their top goalscorer Waseem Isaacs.

The bulky striker burst into the SuperSport box before firing past Williams to make 1-1 on the hour-mark – netting his fifth league goal of the season.

Oswin Appolis was then introduced by Matsatsantsa coach Kaitano Tembo as the hosts looked to restore their lead.

The South Africa youth international came close to scoring in the 75th minute when his powerful low shot hit the upright with De Jong rooted to the ground.

The hosts pushed for a late winning goal, but they were frustrated by the visitors’ defence and ultimately, Stellenbosch held SuperSport to a 1-1 draw.
