SUPERSPORT THRASH SWALLOWS

SuperSport United proved too strong for their Gauteng rivals, Swallows FC as they claimed a 3-0 win in a DStv Premiership match at the Dobsonville Stadium on Sunday afternoon.

The victory took Matsatsantsa to the top of the league standings, while Amaswaiswai slipped down to 11th place after recording their first home defeat in the top flight since 2015.

Matsatsantsa were the better side in the opening exchanges, but they were limited to long range shots with the Amaswaiswai defence looking resolute.

Iqraam Rayners fired the game’s first shot on target with his curling attempt from outside the box being brilliantly saved by goalkeeper Virgil Vries 13 minutes into the encounter.

Vries was the busier of the two keepers as the Namibia international pulled off a decent save to deny SuperSport’s free-kick specialist Teboho Mokoena from a set-piece just before the half-hour mark.

A few minutes later, the best chance of the first-half fell for Keletso Makgalwa, who found himself in a one-on-one situation with keeper Ronwen Williams following a quick counter attack by Swallows.

However, somehow the former South Africa under-20 international tripped over himself and the visitors cleared their lines, and the score was 0-0 at the interval.

The visitors continued to control the game after the restart and they were awarded a penalty after Sipho Sibiya was adjudged to have handled a cross from Mokoena.

Jamie Webber then stepped up and beat Vries from the penalty spot to hand SuperSport a 1-0 lead two minutes after the hour-mark with the Tshwane giants looking dominant.

Webber was involved when the visitors doubled their lead a minute later as Vries failed to handle the 23-year-old starlet’s low cross and Mokoena was there to score from close range to make it 2-0 to SuperSport.

Sibiya was having a bad second-half as he commited another penalty when he fouled Webber in the box and Thamsanqa Gabuza converted from the spot-kick to hand SuperSport a 3-0 lead in the 71st minute.

Swallows did have a chance to grab a late consolation goal, but Williams pulled a magnificent save to deny Kagiso Malinga to ensure that SuperSport ran out 3-0 winners on the day.
