Salary discrepancies between male and females in sports need to be addressed soon. We also need to consider launching a campaign of awareness where both male and female players promote equality of genders in football.

These were assertions made by Minister of Women in the Presidency, Susan Shabangu during the launch of Sasol’s sponsorship for women football in Sandton, Johannesburg.

Shabangu told the packed auditorium, this will show the younger generation that gender discrimination does not exist in sports.

“We can no longer accept to live in a world where there are salary discrepancies between male and female soccer players or any other sport for that matter.

“It cannot be that the highest paid male football player in the world earns close to R300 million per year, while the highest paid female earns only R7 million,” she argued.

The Minister strongly congratulated Sasol for their commitment to national soccer and urged other corporates to follow suit.

“This is a remarkable contribution to nation-building.”
