TEN-MAN SPORTING BEAT GALAXY ON PENALTIES

TS Sporting defeated Mpumalanga rivals TS Galaxy 5-4 on penalties (0-0 after extra-time) to book their spot in the last-16 of the Nedbank Cup at Emirates Airline Park (Ellis Park) on Saturday afternoon.

Abantu Bemthetho played the entire extra-time period with 10-man following Humphrey Khoza’s sending off, but held on and were faultless from the spot as they advanced onto the next round at the expense of the 2019 champions.

Galaxy were the better team in the early exchanges and had the ball in the back of the net with 20 minutes on the clock, but Felix Badenhorst’s goal was disallowed after the ball was adjudged to have gone out before Masilake Phohlongo picked out the eSwatini international.

Badenhorst had two more chances before the halftime break, but on both occasions the Sporting defence stood up to the task.

Sporting’s mission was made tougher in the 89th minute as Khoza received his marching orders for a dangerous tackle on Wayde Lekay, but with no goal forthcoming in regulation time, the game proceeded to an extra 30 minutes.

The best chance of extra-time fell on the head of Mxolisi Macuphu but he was denied by Abram Ngcobo who made a great save to keep the 10-man visitors in the game.

Ngcobo saved Mlungisi Mbunjana’s opening spot-kick and this proved decisive as after eight successful kicks, Bradley Mojela stepped up to net the winner for Abantu Bemthetho.
