A total 13 categories are up for grabs for over 45 nominees at this year’s iShashalazi Theatre and Dance Awards, to recognize best community theatre and dance acts and talent in Gauteng over the 2019/20 period.
Organized by the Gauteng Department of Sport, Arts, Culture and Recreation (GDSACR), the 2020 Awards will be held on Friday, 04 December at the Market Theatre in Newtown, Johannesburg.
They are held annually at the beginning of the year, to recognise and celebrate excellence in community theatre in Gauteng. Following the Covid19 lockdown regulations, they are however only happening now. Individuals and productions are awarded for outstanding execution in performance, writing, directing, music and dance.
Special and Life-Time Achievement Awards are also presented to personalities who have made significant and impactful contribution to the development of community theatre.
“We are glad we can still shine a light on the hard work our artists put into their works despite the Covid19 outbreak and lockdown. As much as nothing much was happening, a lot has been happening which is content for many creatives.
“Community theatre is where it all begins, with storylines that reflect everyday lives, hopes and challenges of a people. It is where raw and unpolished talent is found and a programme like iShashalazi has ensured we help ignite the love of creative arts and storytelling”; says MEC Hhlope.
The programme (iShashalazi Theatre and Dance) is part of GDSACR’s Creative Arts, aimed at identifying, nurturing and exposing talent in performance arts. Having worked with esteemed artists such as Mduduzi Mabaso, Meshack Mavuso, Terry Pheto and Mpho Malatsi and others to elevate emerging talents, the programme continues to be a vehicle towards mainstream success for many.
