2022 MTN8 tournament is coming to an end today, a winner between Amazulu and Orlando Pirates will be crowned champions tonight. The winners will receive R8 million tonight and the competition’s coveted trophy which is one of the three domestic trophies attainable by its competitors each soccer season.
According to Reports by IDiski Times , The Premier Soccer League and MTN have confirmed there will be a new trophy from next season onwards, with the Buccaneers having the chance to claim the current trophy for lifetime.
The news were confirmed by MTN8 General Manager – Brand and Marketing, Nomsa Chabeli during the MTN8 pre-match press conference in Durban.
If Pirates will win Saturday’s final against AmaZulu, it would be their fourth MTN8 since the inception of the current format and name, with MTN8 confirming the Sea Robbers would then be allowed to keep hold of the trophy because it would be their fourth triumph and more than any other Premier Soccer League club.
However, if AmaZulu would win the trophy, they would be required to give it back since it would be their first ever MTN8 title. If Usuthu would beat Pirates, they keep it for the year, which was the normal routine done by the telecommunications brand since they took over as the sponsor.
The Buccaneers first won in in the 2010/11 season at the Moses Mabhida Stadium, and added two more in 2011/12 at the FNB Stadium and in 2020/21 at the Mabhida Stadium again.
AmaZulu, meanwhile, have reached their first ever MTN8 final.
