TRAFFIC ADVISORY: LANE REDUCTIONS AS PART OF THE RANDBURG UDF PROJECT

The Johannesburg Development Agency (JDA), responsible for managing infrastructure projects on behalf of the City of Johannesburg, wishes to inform commuters of anticipated traffic disruptions due to the commencement of upgrades at the Bram Fischer Drive and Jan Smuts Avenue intersection in Randburg.

As part of the Urban Development Framework (UDF) for the Randburg CBD, the JDA has initiated extensive improvements to enhance the infrastructure in the area. This project is scheduled to take place till May 2024.

To facilitate these enhancements, Jan Smuts Avenue and Braam Fisher Drive will be reduced to one lane.

The following works will be conducted during this period:

  • Asphalt sealing
  • Reconstruction of 700m pavement
  • Replacement of stormwater grid inlets and kerb inlets
  • Widening of walkways along Jan Smuts Avenue
  • Road marking and installation of road signs
  • Universal access enhancements

The one-lane road closure will enable the execution of the aforementioned activities. Both Braam Fisher Drive and Jan Smuts Avenue will be limited to one lane while the existing road and processing base are milled.

The reduction of road lanes will only apply during the milling and processing of the base; other project activities will not affect the roadways.

Commuters are advised to plan their routes accordingly and to expect delays during this period. Alternative routes should be considered where possible to minimise inconvenience.

Motorists are urged to adhere to all traffic management measures and exercise caution when navigating through the construction zone.

“The JDA understands the inconvenience this upgrade may cause. The significance of this project is to improve the functionality of the Randburg CBD, one of the economic hubs in the City of Johannesburg,” JDA Executive Manager: Project Implementation Siyabonga Genu said.

“These improvements not only aim to streamline traffic flow but also prioritize safety and accessibility for all road users. Your patience and cooperation are invaluable as we work towards creating a more efficient and inclusive urban environment,” he noted.

ABOUT THE RANDBURG UDF

The UDF aims to provide a medium to long-term strategic direction to ensure integrated and sustainable development, protect and enhance land value, encourage densification, diversification, and intensification, preserve the natural environment and promote pedestrian and Non-Motorised Transport (NMT) activities while reducing reliance on cars.

The upgrading of Bram Fischer and Jan Smuts intersection will enhance pedestrian and vehicle movement, improve the quality of the public environment, and promote the development of a compact, pedestrian-friendly environment.

The upgrades will include a raised pedestrian crossing from the market to Hill Street Mall, introducing traffic calming measures such as paved intersections and highlighting pedestrian crossing points.

The upgrades will also incorporate street furniture elements such as feature lighting, bins, benches, and bollards and introduce soft landscaping.
