The Johannesburg Development Agency (JDA), on behalf of the City of Johannesburg’s Transport Department, undertook the Roodepoort CBD Transport Master Plan (TMP) to improve accessibility and mobility while enhancing the Roodepoort CBD.
The main objective of the plan is to strategically guide investment by the public and private sectors in transport system improvements over the next 10 years to unlock opportunities in the Roodepoort CBD.
It will determine the appropriate modes of transport (including walking, cycling and minibus taxis, conventional buses and metered taxis) for Roodepoort CBD and how to meet existing and future transport demand in a sustainable manner.
As part of the City’s Complete Streets Vision, the redevelopment of the CBD will also prioritise controlled parking and encourage pedestrian-friendly routes along busy roads such as Van Wyk and Albertina Sisulu streets.
The JDA appointed GIBB and Lemon Pebble as the urban design specialists on the project.
Stakeholder engagement meetings took place to obtain input from residents, business, pedestrians, informal traders, public transport commuters and service providers to have a collaborative development of the TMP.
“The Roodepoort TMP seeks to position and re-activate Roodepoort as a key node. It forms part of the Spatial Development Framework 2040’s priority transformation areas and aligns to the JDA’s objective to support growth and economic nodes into high-quality, investor-friendly and sustainable urban environments,” says Mokgema Mongane, the CEO of JDA.
“The plan will provide an efficient and effective transport system to integrate land use and public transport plans. The full participation of the Roodepoort CBD community and stakeholders will be crucial to its implementation and the success of its outcomes,” adds Mongane.
