TRIBUTE TO PHIL “MR CLEAN , MR JONES” SETSHEDI

Orlando Pirates Football Club is deeply saddened by the news of the passing of one of our former players and a true legend of the club, Phil Setshedi.

Affectionately known as “Mr. Clean, Mr. Jones” Setshedi left an indelible mark on the Buccaneers during his time with the club in the late 70s.

During his playing days with Orlando Pirates, Phil Setshedi was a formidable defender. He earned the nickname “Mr. Clean” for the way he carried himself both on and off the field. He was always impeccably dressed, and his commitment to cleanliness and personal grooming was a testament to his professionalism. But it wasn’t just his appearance that set him apart; it was his dedication to the beautiful game that truly defined him.

Beyond the Pitch

What made Bra Phil even more special was his contribution to the club off the field. After hanging up his boots, he ventured into the world of fashion, managing a clothing store by the name of Deans (in Carlton Centre, Johannesburg CBD). Orlando Pirates benefited from his expertise as he provided the club with the latest suits and ties, ensuring that the team always looked sharp and professional.

However, it wasn’t long before Phil Setshedi was reunited with Orlando Pirates, this time at an administrative level. His dedication to the club and his deep knowledge of the game led to his appointment as Team Manager – a position he served until 2007.

A Record That Stands

One record that remains unbroken in the annals of Orlando Pirates’ history is Phil Setshedi’s remarkable achievement in 1980. In that year, he took on the role of player-coach for the club. Under his leadership, the team went on a remarkable 17-game unbeaten streak, a feat that has only once been matched but not beaten (Kostadin Papic 2004-05) still resonates with Bucs fans today.

The run culminated in Pirates lifting the Mainstay Cup by beating Moroka Swallows 3-2 in front of a packed Orlando Stadium.

On behalf of Orlando Pirates, we convey our heartfelt and deepest sympathy to the Setshedi family and pledge our profound moral support.

We supplicate that God gives the family fortitude at this moment of extreme grief and pain.
