WESTBURY CLINIC MIDWIFERY AND OBSTETRIC UNIT OPENS OFFICIALLY

Ayanda Radebe

The Gauteng MEC for Health and Wellness, Nomantu Nkomo-Ralehoko, along with the Executive Mayor of the City of Johannesburg, Cllr Kabelo Gwamanda, and the MMC for Health and Social Development, Cllr Ennie Makhafola, officially opened the newly built Westbury Clinic Midwifery Obstetric Unit (MOU) on 17 May 2024. The unit addresses the growing need in Region B for 24-hour maternal health services, including antenatal and postnatal care, midwifery and obstetrics, and counselling on pregnancy termination options.

Previously, Westbury patients self-referred to Rahima Moosa Mother and Child Hospital, leading to an overflow of patients. Many of these cases could be effectively managed at a Community Health Centre level.

The establishment of the MOU at Westbury Clinic aligns with the Health Ombud’s recommendations to expand the maternity capacity of Rahima Moosa Maternity and Child Hospital to meet the growing community demand.

“This healthcare facility represents our dedication to meeting the diverse and evolving healthcare needs of the community of Westbury. It is equipped with state-of-the-art medical technology, resources, and dedicated healthcare professionals to handle a wide range of medical situations,” said MMC Makhafola.

Currently, the clinic operates as a hybrid centre, with the City of Johannesburg overseeing Primary Health Care services from 07:00 to 16:00, Monday to Friday. The provincial government manages the 24-hour Midwives Obstetric Unit, ensuring expectant mothers without complications can deliver their babies without delays.

Since opening its doors on 29 April 2024, the 12 midwives working at the facility have attended to nine patients and successfully delivered two babies.

The Westbury Clinic Midwifery and Obstetric Unit is a significant step forward in providing accessible, high-quality maternal healthcare to the Westbury community, alleviating pressure on regional hospitals, and ensuring better health outcomes for mothers and babies.
