The Johannesburg Development Agency (JDA), on behalf of the City of Johannesburg’s Social Development Department, is making meaningful strides in the construction of the Yetta Nathan Early Childhood Development (ECD) and Community Centre in Orlando West, Soweto.
The project has now reached 39% completion, marking a significant milestone in delivering a sustainable, inclusive, and community-driven public facility.
Located on November Street, Mzimhlophe, the new 2,875m² development creates a safe, stimulating, and environmentally sustainable space for young children. Once complete, the centre will feature a range of modern early childhood development amenities, including classrooms, indoor and outdoor play areas, a kitchen, a library, a toy store, and supporting communal spaces.
A key feature of the facility is its hydroponic aquafarm, located in the lower ground area. This innovative component supports green, soil-less food production, offering the community a model for urban agriculture and food security.
The new ECD Centre is an extension of the existing Yetta Nathan Community Centre, a space steeped in history. Originally dating back to the Second World War, it became a crèche in 1953. In 2003, the City’s first official ECD Centre was established. The new development aims to honour this legacy while supporting future generations.
“The Yetta Nathan ECD and Community Centre is a powerful example of how infrastructure can strengthen communities and invest in our children’s futures,” said Themba Mathibe, CEO of the JDA.
“This project brings together innovation, heritage, and sustainability. It will provide children with a nurturing environment that supports learning and development while also creating a communal space that enhances local resilience and pride. The progress achieved to date reflects the City’s commitment to delivering impactful infrastructure that transforms lives,” he said.
The JDA continues to implement the facility using sustainable construction principles with energy-efficient building materials and methodologies. The development is also labour-intensive, creating local job opportunities during its implementation and further strengthening socio-economic outcomes in the area.
The Yetta Nathan ECD and Community Centre form part of the City’s broader vision of promoting inclusive, accessible, and resource-efficient urban spaces where communities can grow and thrive.
